Bora Bora!

This post has been remotely blogged.

Bora Bora Organic Foods lootTime for a review of some food that I’ve actually seen in a grocery store. (My primary store, Harris Teeter, has recently started carrying the bars.)

Have you seen them?

Please note that the products mentioned in this post were sent to me, free of charge, for the purpose of reviewing on Unusual Passions. This is my attempt to present an unbiased analysis. I did not consider cost in my evaluation.

The company:

The "spirit and purity" of Bora Bora (a French Polynesian island) inspired some people to create a company based on those principles. At least, that’s the premise of Bora Bora Organic Foods.

All bars boast the following:

  • USDA Certified Organic (at least 95% organic ingredients)
  • contain no refined sugars (fruit, agave syrup, honey and brown rice syrup, all organic, used to sweeten)
  • no preservatives
  • gluten free
  • non-GMO (genetically modified organisms)
  • vegan* + non-dairy
  • kosher
  • free of trans fats
  • soy-free

According to their website, Bora Bora Ltd. donates 10% of profits back to initiatives that support sustainable farming and renewable energy resources. They pledge to minimize waste and even their corrugated packaging supports and uses wind power, through the Forest Stewardship Council.

*Two flavors, Exotic Coconut Almond and Paradise Walnut Pistachio use honey.

The goods:

Bora Bora Organic Foods kindly sent me 5 bars, a tube of Wild Pomegranate lip balm, and three stick-on tattoos (those were FUN!). Bora Bora Foods tattoo

The bars are created with three different objectives—to get going, feel great, and live long. I can’t vouch for those claims, but I can for the gustatory experience! My mom reluctantly offered her opinion as well.

Bora Bora taste-testNow I bet they wish they sent me 6 bars! (You know, to make it even…)

As you can see, these toothsome bars are replete with chunky nuts and moist dried fruit. Most are made with puffed rice, adding to the texture profile. Despite the varying degree of sweetness (from brown rice syrup, honey, agave nectar, and dried fruits, including dates) none of the bars are saccharine or cloying.

    superfood.

    Wild Pomegranate Pecan bar

    • Wild Pomegranate Pecan – The favorite of both my mom and I, this is a very balanced bar in terms of taste and texture. The crisp rice offers a light crunch while the rich pecans and cashews make for a firmer bite. The nuts are in perfect proportion to the dried cherries and sultana raisins. I like how Audrey described them:

When I first bit into it I was almost knocked over with the intense, chewy, fruity taste that exploded in my mouth. This bar had a pliable and toothsome consistency that was neither too squishy nor too hard. Every bite was delicious! With buttery pecans complementing plentiful dried fruit, you really can’t go wrong—BIG yum!

        • Exotic Coconut Almond  Despite my mom’s aversion to coconut (the flavor was quite present), she thought it was perfectly sweet. The whole, dry-roasted almonds and toasted coconut contributed to the excellent texture, although I must say the bar is slightly oily.
        • also: Tropical Sesame Cranberry and Native Acai Walnut (coming soon)

        antioxidant.

hmm...Just how much do I like this “Bora Bora” stuff?
Enough to put it on my face?

        • Paradise Walnut Pistachio – This bar is definitely very colorful and visually appealing. I detected a predominant raisin flavor—it reminds me of trail mix.
        • also: Tiki Blueberry Flax (they’ve got some, umm.. creative names!) and Pacific Mango Macadamia (coming soon)

        energy.

        P1130842b

        •  Island Brazil Nut Almond – My mom liked it, but I was disappointed. This bar boasts brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds (pepitas), almonds, and sunflower seeds, but all I could taste were the peanuts. This is nuttiest bar of the bunch.
        • Volcanic Chocolate Banana Appropriately complex flavors are present in this one. Paired with an underlying coconut flavor, the tropical dried bananas are intense, along with antioxidant-rich cocoa powder. The downside? An oily mouthfeel.
        • also: Tribal Cinnamon Oatmeal

They have some new flavors coming soonNative Acai Walnut and Pacific Mango Macadamia. That last one sounds really good—you know I like mango!

        Wild Pomegranate Pecan

They also sent me some “Wild Pomegranate”-flavored certified organic lip balm. I don’t know where (or if) you can buy it, but I like it. (It sort of makes me want a Wild Pomegranate Pecan bar.) The ingredients are as follows: cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, beeswax, simmondsiea chinesis (jojoba) seed oil, flavor, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), helianthus annus (sunflower) seed oil, stevia rebaudiana (stevia) leaf extract, punica granatum (pomegranate) extract, tocopherol. Let me know if I spelled any of those wrong—my spell checker (and brain) definitely cannot handle all that Latin!

        visit the website to:

        • search by ingredient
        • learn specific nutritional information
        • find out where to buy (psst! Harris Teeter carries these now…)
        • view a detailed picture and description of each bar
        • enter for a chance to win 3 free cases of bars

PS – I love doing entire posts for product reviews, but it makes me feel a tad silly because I see other bloggers just slipping the reviews into other posts. I’m not too concerned which method is more effectual, because I’m having fun eating and reviewing; I’m doing my best. However, when I get short on time (i.e. when school starts in the fall), I might resort to quicker reviews. Until then… enjoy!

          learning through blogging.

Besides the actual content on the blogs, there’s a lot that I’ve learned on my foray into the world of blogging and online interactions. (I started Unusual Passions in January 2010.)

          business.

I’ve corresponding with companies regarding free products to review. I wonder if they knew I was 15? (If you are one of those marketing coordinators I linked to a review, thanks for the life lessons! :D )

Thank you to Audrey for helping me get started with product reviews!

          business

I’ve decided not to attempt to make money from the blog for now. That’s really not an intent I could passionately write with. However, I really enjoy reviewing free products, as well as restaurants and services I do pay for.

          websites.

It took me a while to figure out themes, widgets, sidebars, posts—there’s a lot that goes into a webpage; more than I thought! I also learned about HTML when I was making my sidebar boxes. (Can you tell I’ve spruced things up a little? I added a picture of myself!)

          HTML nonsense

          legal.

When I went to write my disclosures and disclaimers, I read a lot of legal jargon and junk. It’s all now cemented in my mind as a way to either reinforce common sense or replace common sense. You decide.

I read a couple sites to find help with writing disclaimers.

          personal.

Handycon 2 HeartI’ve learned how to better communicate through the medium of my blog posts as well as dozens of comment boxes scattered around the web. I’ve learned how to write trivial words just to let people know I’ve read their tips and thoughts and that I care. I’ve learned how to network a little more, even in this age of social networking.

          communication.

The underlying themes of each of these areas: effective communication with fellow man. It’s as simple as that. Praise the Lord.

What have you learned through blogging? (Or reading blogs?)

Here’s some more HTML for you:

          OOPS! I meant…

          Alisha's "signature"

          No Shampoo?!

What does your haircare routine look like?

How often do you shampoo (and condition) your hair?

Since I got my hair cut super-short, I’ve just been shampooing with Hugo Naturals Lemon Verbena shampoo for oily hair. Besides brushing it out and parting it in the morning, that’s all.

          But what if I could…

          • stop buying shampoo.
          • wash my hair less.
          • achieve ultimate haircare freedom!

The first step to freedom was short hair, and the next step might possibly be ending my reliance on the commercial haircare industry! This fits with my new “buy less” ideals.

          The deal with No ‘Poo.

          what? how? why?

Don’t worry. It’s not some juvenile joke.

imageIt’s giving up shampoo in favor of natural items like baking soda and apple cider vinegar.  Is it so crazy to think that we don’t need to clean our hair with a “delightlfully fragranced” blend of chemicals*, soap, and water packaged in colorful plastic?

*I apologize to all my science teachers, but I am wary of chemicals. Think: harsh and quite possibly harmful.

As proven in studies, whatever is applied to the skin is absorbed into the body: into your bloodstream and into your organs. Do you want these in your body?

Ingredients in Herbal Essences “no flakin’ way” (anti-dandruff) shampoo:

pyrithione zinc (active ingredient), water, ammonium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium chloride, glycol distearate, dimethicone, ammonium xylenesulfonate, citric acid, cucumis sativus (cucumber) fruit extract, cymbopogon schoenanthus oil, fragrance, cetyl alcohol, cocamide mea, polyquaternium-10, trimethylolpropane tricaprylate/tricaprate, hydrogenated polydecene, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, peg-7m, benzyl alcohol, propylene glycol, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone

Read about the purpose of these ingredients. Dangerous chemicals on this list are ammonium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium chloride, propylene glycol, methylisothiazolinone. These aren’t even all the bad guys found in commercial shampoos!

apple-cider-vinegarShampoo strips the natural oils from your scalp, unbalancing your natural oil production and requiring the use of conditioner. (Maybe the haircare companies have an agenda?)

Therefore, when you start ‘no poo, there is a greasy transition period of several weeks before your scalp’s oil production balances out. That’s why I want to try it in the summertime!

Need another reason? It’s cheaper. Money talks, doesn’t it?

You use simple products that you probably have in your kitchen—apple cider vinegar, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), honey. If you want to get fancy, you can add essential oils like tea tree, rosemary, or lavender or make it smell nice with vanilla and cinnamon. Please read this great resource for how to go about ditching your shampoo!

          (research, how-to, success stories, etc.)

          My experience.

I’ve actually tried this before; last summer (with long hair) I went without shampoo and conditioner for a while. It didn’t work very well for me then. I was so secretive about it! I can’t imagine why.

I’m going to try again this summer, now that I have shorter hair. It might be an easier option for washing my hair while on my missions trip; it may not. We’ll see.

          Keep me accountable.

How do I go about this without getting caught up in the “identity/status” aspect of it? Of course, I know it’s not considered that cool to go against the grain and not shampoo your hair, but it’s something I would do to define myself.

In the name of sanity, feel free to remind me that I already have a perfect identity—the Alisha that God created and has high hopes for. I can add or take away nothing! (I might be referencing TrueFaced by Bill Thrall, Bruce McNicol, and John Lynch at this point!)

Also, I am not being obsessed with “impurity” from chemicals or physical healthiness. This is just a fun experiment to save money and live simpler!
